Henok Goitom Visits RCD Espanyol

Henok Goitom currently plays in the Swedish premier League with AIK. Previously he has played in both Seria A in Italy and La Liga in Spain.Along with family and friends Henok helped start Kista Galaxy where he also coaches and is very much involved in social projects in the Stockholm suburb of Kista.

As part of the preparation for the development of youth teams at Kista Galaxy Henok asked us if we could organise an educational visit for him and some friends to RCD Espanyol in Barcelona. Henok wanted the Spanish youth coaching experience , its methodology, philosophy and learn from one of the Worlds best football schools.

Plan

1. Meet youth coaches working with RCD Espanyol. Discuss training methodology and design

2. Observe and analyse youth training- from 8 – 15 years

3. Observe and analyse youth matches- From 12-15 years

4. Observe senior team training

5. Meet various club co-ordinators and staff to see how the RCD Espanyol youth academy is structured

Our co-ordinator Oriol Olive met up with Henok on arrival and presented him with an itinery which included all RCD Espanyol Youth games and training sessions plus meetings with various  Espanyol coaches and staff.

Carles Martinez inspirational youth coach at RCD Espanyol

Carles Martinez2

The meeting with Carles Martinez proved to be inspirational. Carles is rated as one of Spains best youth coaches. He coaches RCD Espanyols 12/13 year olds and also has been involved in designing the new player development plan that will soon be brought out by the Catalonian Football Association. Carles invited Henok to one of his sessions and showed how he structured training. Afterwards they sat for over an hour discussing youth training design, ideas and philosophy. One of the main things Henok took from this was how Carles  consistently kept  the young players brains active from warm up, through the wholes session to warm down. This reminded me of what  Carles Martinez said to me when I met him in Easter 2014. ”I train the brain, always the brain”. Henok really liked how Carles structured his training always introducing themes during the warm up.

Co-ordinator and RCD Espanyol match analyst Xavi Diaz gave Henok a tour of the academy complex as well as giving him an insigt in to how he works and how the academy in general is organised. Xavi then invited Henok to watch RCD Espanyols 1st team train in preparation for the coming weekends La Liga game.

Sergi Angulo Lerin was a coach at one of our RCD Espanyol Player Camps in Stockholm Summer 2014. He is now assistant coach at Spanish Div 2 club UE Sant Andreu. He gave Henok a guided tour of the club where he got to see the 1st team train and saw how they worked with young players. It was very interesting to compare and contrast how a La Liga club and a Division 2 club approached youth development.

Jordi  and Henok know each other from our RCD Espanyol player camps in Stockholm. Jordi is  24 and already a holder of a UEFA Pro License.
